Representative “Doc” Hastings takes a stand

I am not sure whom he is working for but Representative Hastings took a stand. With the recent credit card reform bill Representative Hastings took a stand with few other members of the House (about 30 members or 7% of the members)

• He wanted to allow banks to hike the interest on purchases that were already made.

• He opposed limits on fees and penalty with credit cards.

• He opposed limiting aggressive marketing of credit cards to college students.

• He wanted to allow banks to hike interest without notice.

• When banks give low teaser rates he didn’t want to hold them to the rates for six months.

• He supported gift cards expiring earlier.

Maybe it is not clear whom Hastings is working for while he is in DC, but it is clear that he does not work for College Students or the middle class or the 60% of the population that has a balance on a credit card.

Hastings, Marianas, Abramoff refresher

From the June Tri-City Herald.

Doc Hastings visits Framatome.

He still doesn't understand that Social Security is more solvent than the rest of our government.

On inheritance tax he thinks that the big money should remain in the family. Those children were born with a silver spoon in their mouths and no one has the right to take it away.

Any questions about Congressional ethics are dealt with in secret. The public does not have a right to know.

The American healthcare system is the best thing since sliced bread. If people would just go ahead and die younger everyone's insurance costs would be much less. On the positive side he floated the idea that individuals should be entitled to the same tax break for insurance premiums that employers get. If you really want to save money on healthcare keep your foreign citizenship handy.

Prescription benefit is not really all that complicated. Just go to the various providers with your list of prescriptions and see who gives you the best deal. Now how many providers are there? God help you if you sign a contract and your health situation changes and you need different drugs. Tried to blame the complexity on government when the complexity is due to the drug companies who wrote the bill.

Legal immigration is so difficult it's no wonder we have so many illegals. Major sections of agriculture have always depended on migrant workers. In early days the migrant workers were citizens, now they are almost all aliens. Any immigration reform must have a workable guest worker provision because alien workers are an important part of our economy.

Yucca Mountain will be built eventually regardless of what Nevadans think.

He would like to replace the progressive income tax with an (un)FAIR tax. Essentially a sales tax at the national level. The only problem is the 16th amendment to the constitution.

The DeLay UnRule

In his letter about his vote on the DeLay Rule, Doc indicates that the rule was put in place essentially to embarrass Democrats who had a ranking member under indictment. The idea was to claim some higher moral ground than the opposition. But since that didn't acheive the desired effect it was OK in Doc's mind to rescind the rule and go back to the same moral level.

But at the last minute it was decided that it wasn't such a good idea to give the high ground away. So the rule goes back is place. Even if it means trouble for DeLay.

Busy Guy

There are 16 new press releases from Doc in the past week. They all have to do with federal money being spent on behalf of the 4th CD.

Hastings and the DeLay Rule

Doc has chosen not to make public his voice vote on the DeLay Rule. He intends to inform his constituents about his decision in a letter to them. The DeLay Rule vote rescinded a House rule that required any committee chairman who was under indictment to step down from his chairmanships. Tom DeLay of Texas is threatened with an indictment by a grand jury over corporate campaign contributions.

House Ethics

It appears that Doc may have at least taken some action on the DeLay cases. It would be interesting to know whether he was at all interested in calling DeLay to account or in minimizing the damage to DeLay. Nonetheless it looks like the multiple admonishments may be the best that could be obtained. We will have to leave the criminal charges up to the courts.

First Open Thread

What topics are on the minds of people of the 4th CD?

Introduction

I'm an active partisan blogger but I recognize all sides of issues need to be explored to come up with the best answers. I offer this as a place where that can happen. Before too long I hope to add other members to the blogging staff but I'm going to start out slow on that. In the meantime everyone can post in the comments section and I plan to have open threads regularly in which new subjects can be introduced. Happy Posting.
